The photograph featured in A panorama protects its view was shot in Jasper National Park in the fall of 2014. The resulting image was produced through a process of re-photography and was installed in Manning Hall at the Art Gallery of Alberta for a year as well as on a billboard on the outskirts of Jasper for the duration of Future Station: 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art.
These two sites are places where we typically encounter depictions of landscapes; either while driving to the national park, or as images in the gallery. Through a process of folding a typical panoramic image of Jasper, this work reflects on how our understandings and expectations of ecosystems are structured through the images we have been shown and so often reproduce.
